Pola festival, also called Bail Pola, is an important agricultural festival of India, primarily celebrated in the states of Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, and Maharashtra. The festival is celebrated on the new moon day of Bhadrapada month. In 2024, the festival of Bail Pola will fall on 2 September. Farmers and rural people worship their bulls and vital companions in their agricultural work to this day.

It is believed that Lord Vishnu, during his reincarnation on earth as Shri Krishna, his maternal uncle Kansa sent an asura by the name of Polasur to kill him. Lord Krishna killed Polasur with his Leela and that incident happened on the new moon day of Bhadrapad month; henceforth the day was known as Pola. This day is also called Children’s Day, and they are given extra love and affection.
Bail Pola festival is celebrated on two occasions: Bada Pola and Chota Pola. During the Bada Pola, the bulls are decorated, worshipped, and taken in procession within the village. The bull is smeared with turmeric and gram flour paste, massaged with oil, and then bathed in hot water. The horns of the bulls are painted and they are dressed in colorful clothes. Apart from this, the bulls are fed millet khichdi and other special food. On this day, all the people of the village gather at one place, dance, and enjoy the celebration.
