EPSO: Man claims he killed wife, arrested for murder

(EL PASO COUNTY, Colo.) — The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office (EPSO) received a 911 call Sunday, Sept. 1, from a man identified as 79-year-old Stephen Chan, claiming he had killed his wife. This led to his arrest on charges of murder and kidnapping, according to EPSO.

The Sheriff’s Office reported that around 7 a.m. on Sunday, the call came into EPSO, and after claiming to have killed his wife, the caller hung up abruptly. The phone’s location was traced to the area of Walsen Road, just south of the Gleneagle neighborhood, in unincorporated El Paso County.

Shortly after, another call was received by EPSO reporting a body was dumped near the 600 block of Walsen Rd, near Smith Creek. When deputies responded, they discovered the dead body of a woman.

According to EPSO, research on the caller’s phone led to a possibly associated address in the 13800 block of Horsetail Terrace, near Voyager Parkway. The Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD) did a welfare check on the address, but Chan had already gone to one of the CSPD substations, where he was identified and detained by officers.

EPSO has taken over the investigation and reports that Chan was charged with First Degree Murder and Kidnapping. The name of the victim will be released after the El Paso County Coroner’s Office identifies her. This remains an active investigation and there is no known threat to the community.
